Pearrygin Lake State Park

visited 16 July 2022

This park is located in the foothills of the North Cascade mountain range near the old-West themed village of Winthrop. There’s plenty to do here on the water, in the campgrounds, or on its several miles of hiking trails.

I started by exploring the sandy beach. At 8am, it was almost completely deserted, except for a few ducks.

A sandy beach along the edge of Pearrygin Lake with a line of yellow floating buoys marking a swimming area, a large willow tree overhanging the shoreline on the right, and grassy pine-covered hills in the distance under a clear blue sky.

I’m curious about this swim-up picnic table:

I set forth on the Rex Derr hiking trail, dedicated in memory of a former director of the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. This feathered friend was my hiking companion for quite a while along the trail:

A mottled gray-brown grouse stands at the edge of a weathered wooden boardwalk, next to tall grasses and white and yellow wildflowers in morning sunlight.
A narrow dirt singletrack trail winds up a grassy hillside dotted with sagebrush and green shrubs, with forested slopes and distant hazy mountains under a clear deep-blue sky.

My route wound up taking me about three miles through the hills above the lake.

A calm lake surrounded by rolling green and golden hills under a clear deep-blue sky, with tall grasses and shrubs in the foreground and stands of pine trees lining the far shore.
A narrow dirt hiking trail winds uphill through white-barked aspen trees and dense green undergrowth, with sunlight filtering through the leaves and a grassy, sagebrush-covered hillside under a clear blue sky in the background.
A narrow dirt hiking trail winds through dry golden grass and sagebrush toward a valley with a blue lake, surrounded by rolling hills and distant mountains under a clear deep-blue sky.
A narrow dirt hiking trail winds through dry golden grassland and sagebrush toward a blue lake nestled among rolling hills, with distant mountain ranges under a clear deep-blue sky.
A narrow dirt footpath winds through tall green grasses in a broad meadow, with rolling grassy hills and distant mountains under a clear blue sky.
A narrow dirt hiking trail winds through a hillside of dry, golden grass dotted with small yellow wildflowers, with green trees and a lake below and a range of blue mountains under a clear deep-blue sky in the distance.
A two-track gravel road with a grassy median runs straight through open, golden-green meadows toward distant hills and mountains under a clear deep-blue sky, with a lone tree in the middle distance and shrubs and evergreens along the edges.
