Situated on the west shore of Whidbey Island west of Oak Harbor, Joseph Whidbey State Park offers a few miles of hiking trails through forest and wetlands and a long sandy beach.

I’m told it is a great place for storm watching, but on the late spring day when I visited, there were little more than puffy clouds in the sky to see.

I started with the hiking trails and found my way to the beach later.

A grassy mown footpath winds through a lush green meadow bordered by leafy trees and shrubs, beneath a dramatic blue sky filled with scattered white and gray clouds at Joseph Whidbey State Park.

With the rainy spring we’ve had, some of the trails got pretty muddy:

A muddy, waterlogged section of trail winding through dense green undergrowth, with a weathered wooden plank laid across a stretch of standing water and thick brown mud in the foreground.
A pebble beach strewn with large sun-bleached driftwood logs curving along a calm bay, with grassy dunes on the right, distant tree-covered shoreline and mountains across the water, and a bright blue sky filled with scattered clouds.
