Goldendale Observatory State Park Heritage Site

visited 5 February 2022

Washington is home to one of the few large telescopes available for public viewing. I toured Goldendale Observatory on a Saturday afternoon when we could study the sun and see its sunspots.

The park is situated high on a hill and thus offers panoramic views of the Columbia Valley to its south.

Let’s … umm … not discuss my weight on Jupiter.

This is the original 24.5ʺ Cassegrain mirror, which was in service until a 2018 upgrade.

The Special Equipment for Kids? · While the telescope is being moved into place, a young observer asks about the equipment to filter the light. Is it available for kids?
The park ranger / astronomer adjusts the telescope’s position for optimal viewing.
